The Tasmanian government wants to allow two more casinos in Tasmania, taking the total number of casinos to four.

Discussion over a new state gaming license allowing Two more casinos in Tasmania began on Wednesday when the Liberal administration announced that parliament plans to start an “open and transparent process”

The Federal Group had a monopoly on casinos, poker machines and Keno in Tasmania. The current deal is to end in 2023. Treasurer Peter Gutwein has revealed that government is to support extra non-residential casino licenses at each end of the state. The southern casino project may be given to Museum of Old and New Art’s operator, David Walsh.

Treasurer Peter Gutwein:

“The government’s position is that limited new high roller, non-residential casino licenses should be available in Tasmania in addition to the Federal Group’s two casinos. The government’s view is that in the first instance, the opportunity to apply for such a licence should be afforded to Mr Walsh, given he initially came forward with a proposal in respect of financially supporting the Mona museum.”

Walsh’s initial project consisted of up to 12 gambling tables at his complex in Hobart’s northern suburbs and was targeted on wealthy international art lovers. An important part of the gaming licence negotiations will be poker machines, as there are 3,530 of them across the state.

Treasurer Peter Gutwein:

“In relation to [pokies] in hotels and clubs, our policy position is that the rights to operate these machines post 2023 will be allocated and priced by a market-based mechanism, such as a tender,”

“The placement or relocation of [pokies] into new venues outside of the casino environment should not be solely determined by the industry and the public interest should be taken into account. This will give local communities a voice in determining the future location of [pokies] in their community, which has been lacking.”
